They had been ruling this pack for some time now, Reine and her brothers. They were prospering. No sick wolves, fat healthy pups, they had a prey storage even stocked. It was tranquil.
Reine had returned from patrolling near the cave lions caverns at moonrise. The other wolves welcome her back as she passes them, and wish each other goodnight as she walks to her shared den. When she gets there she is greeted by Darius. Jae still hasn't returned from taking the apprentices to Ghost Forest, to take their trails to become deputies.
"Good Evening, brother." she greets Darius with a hug.
"Welcome back." he steps back from her and beckons her deeper into the dens. The look on his face suggests he has something he wishes to speak about. She follows him with a concerned look. He was tense. serious.
"Dearest Sister," he turns to her. "I think we should go back to Andromedea."
"WHAT!??" Reine shouts then turns into a harsh whisper as she remembers the others had gone to sleep. "Are you insane? We were banished, Darius. We can never go back."
"For a crime, we didn't commit!" he growls. "The ice wolves guarded the One King for generations. To be hunted and shamed after the death of the One King? Not even giving a chance to prove our innocence!" his growls grow as he starts to get in Reine's face. "It was our home. To be thrown out and not even fight for it brings dishonor in the bloodline."
“And do WHAT exactly when we get there?!” she softly growls back trying to remain calm with reason and not feed him hot-tempered energy. “Mother and Father did everything to keep us safe.”
“Mother and Father spend their life running as fugitives! There was no destination!” Darius loses his temper as he snarls and slams his paw on the floor in emphasis. “We are plenty strong, Moon. We even managed to pick up a few of the old guards. I say we go and take back our home.”
“We will not barge in and kill, Darius. That only provides them with more mistrust in us.”
“But-”
“We serve the One King.” she states firmly. “He knows we are not the cause of his death. You will stain our names in blood and make his spirit look down at us in shame!” she softly growls. “This is not up for discussion. We will NOT start a war.” Reine points out the den. “They are happy here. They are safe, and well fed.”
Darius adverts his gaze. Anger and shame flickering on his face. Reine’s face softens and she lays her head on his shoulder. Angry tears spill from his eyes as his body trembles. “It was their home. It was our home.”
“Our home is each other. Me, you and Jae. Mother and Father's home was each other. Not some silly castle.”
They went to bed, and Reine thought it was the last time they’d talk about that, but she was wrong. Over the next few days, the argument made its way into the pack. Sides were taken. Nearly 50/50 split. Reine and Darius at the front of their sides growling at each other, and their supporters behind them.
“I am your Alpha!” an eerie snarl rips through his throat, silencing all the wolves as they coward. All but Reine, who only stands tall with glaring eyes.
‘‘I am the alpha as well, Darius. What you want will only lead to disaster.” the air starts to spark around her with charged energy before fading.
“YOU WILL COME WITH US!!” He roars and she has only a few seconds to see his sclera cloud over in black before he is on top of her snarling and fangs digging into her neck. A yelp escapes her and she wastes no time in retaliating, biting his leg and sends an electrical current up it. She rolls onto her back, dragging him down and sinks her own fangs in his cheeks. The black fades and his eyes widen when they meet hers.
Darius scrambles to get off his sister in a panicked state.
“I-im sorry! Sorry. Sorry Im so sorry!” he pleads over and over repeated, backing away from her and the other wolves. They whisper to each other. Giving him looks. “Moon I-” his words choke as he sees the white fur stained red around her neck as she stands.
“We will not go to Andromedea.” he announces before quickly slinking away to the den with his tail tucked.
The pack stands there. What had just happened? What do they do?
“We shall no longer speak of the subject,” Reine says, dissolving the pack tensions and going to check on her brother, who weeps in the dark corner. She goes to tell him its okay, but this was the start of the rift between the Red Thorn King and the Snow Queen.
End.
